by Fudge Fingas

Superior, seductive Deep House from Fudge Fingas, backed with a dubbed Vakula re-rub. Mr Fingas is hardly the most prolific producer out there, but when he does decide it's time to release, you need to pay attention. His A-side is 'What Works', an elegantly paced and beautifully spaced out piece of jazzy House magic working with the richest bass/kick syncopation and rendering the keys and claps to the high House heavens. The specially cut intro is a lovely touch the vinyl fiends will love. Flipside Vakula wraps up a heavily padded dub version, all fluidly shifting surfaces and sensuous bass rubs layered with filigree strings, before Fudge Fingas caps the vibe with the Carl Craig-esque synth and subbass magic of 'Mass X'. (Boomkat)

Gavin Sutherland aka Fudge Fingas is the man behind the seventh missive for the peerless Firecracker imprint, with "What Works" showing a move away from the soulful strains of his recent long player and towards moody, shuffling Detroit house. It seems fitting that remix duties are handed to Vakula - it was Firecracker after all who first showcased the Ukrainian producer's sounds to a wider audience - and despite his prolific form in recent times, his appearance here still feels very special indeed. Unsurprisingly, he turns in a memorable, highly atmospheric remix of "What Works", before another Fudge original, the chiming sea of calm that is "Mass X", rounds off an essential release. (Juno)
